Notary & Affidavit

Notary public and commissioner of oaths services

An affidavit is a written statement that a person (the deponent) swears or affirms is true. Affidavits are often used as evidence in court, but they are also needed for many everyday purposes, for example to confirm single status before marrying abroad, or to support an immigration application.

Notarizing a document means having a neutral official verify that your identity and signature, or a copy of a document, are genuine. In Ontario, notarization is governed by the Notaries Act. It deters fraud, makes documents more credible and offers legal protection.

Our notary services include

  • Certified true copies of degrees, diplomas, certificates, wills, and marriage and death certificates
  • Invitation letters for visitors to Canada
  • Name change affidavits
  • Commissioning oaths and affidavits
  • Affidavits for stolen vehicles and insurance claims
  • Transfer of vehicle ownership
  • OSAP applications
  • Signature and identity verification for employment, background checks and security clearances
  • Contracts, leases and other agreements
  • Real estate and mortgage documents, in and outside Canada
  • Statutory declarations for citizenship and immigration applications
  • Statutory declarations for a lost or stolen passport or travel document

And more. If your matter isn't listed, ask us.

What to know

What to bring

The original document (and copies, if you need certified copies) and valid government photo identification. Don't sign an affidavit beforehand: you sign it in front of us.

When you swear an affidavit

Everything in it must be true. State only facts you know to be true, and make clear when something is your opinion or based on information from someone else.

Documents for use abroad

Some countries also need the document authenticated after it is notarized. Ask us which steps your destination country requires.
