Employment Law

Employment law for employees and employers

In Canada, employment law generally refers to the law governing an individual employee's relationship with an employer, while labour law governs unionized workplaces.

At Krupa Shah Law Professional Corporation, we take a client-centred approach and are committed to long-term relationships. We help employers and employees with a wide range of issues and work closely with our clients to reach a fair result, in and out of the courtroom.

We can help with

  • Wrongful and unjust dismissal
  • Layoffs
  • Severance pay and packages
  • Employment contracts (drafting and review)
  • Compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Human rights and discrimination
  • Workplace and sexual harassment
  • Workplace policies for employers

And more. If your matter isn't listed, ask us.

What to know

Minimums and more

The Employment Standards Act, 2000 sets the minimum notice and severance in Ontario. Many employees are entitled to more under the common law, depending on age, length of service and the role.

Before you sign a release

Get advice before signing a severance package. Once a release is signed, it is usually too late to ask for more.

Deadlines

Most claims must be started within two years, and complaints under the Employment Standards Act and the Human Rights Code have their own time limits.

General information only, not legal advice. Laws, rates and deadlines change; speak with a lawyer about your situation. See our legal disclaimer.
