Wills & Estates

Compassionate and effective wills and estates lawyers in Toronto

It is not something most of us like to think about, but having a will in place helps ensure that your family and loved ones are taken care of financially in the event of your death or incapacity. We work with clients to understand and prepare their finances and assets for the future.

This includes creating an estate plan to benefit loved ones, preparing powers of attorney, and making sure wealth and businesses are protected from unnecessary taxes and probate costs. When a loved one has passed, we also guide executors through probate and the administration of the estate.

What to know

Without a will

If someone dies without a will in Ontario, their estate is shared under a fixed formula in the Succession Law Reform Act, which may not match their wishes, and someone has to apply to court to be appointed to administer it.

Estate Administration Tax

Ontario's probate tax is charged on the value of assets that pass through the will. Planning with multiple wills, joint ownership and named beneficiaries can lawfully reduce it.

Powers of attorney

A will speaks only after death. Powers of attorney for property and for personal care name who decides for you if you can't decide for yourself while you are alive.
